FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out.
This is the emotion that makes traders enter at the wrong moment more than any other — and I will say it outright: you have definitely been hit by it.
A familiar scene: you watched gold all day, price flat, you got bored, went to eat, came back — gold has surged 200 points!
A voice fires instantly: "Damn, I missed it! Get in fast, before it goes even further!"
You hit Long at the very top — and price immediately pulls back in your face.
This is FOMO — and it has a clear mechanic.
Why does FOMO make you enter at the top?
Because FOMO is strongest after price has already run far — when the move is nearly over.
When price starts to run (the point you should enter) — nobody is FOMOing yet, because they cannot see it will go far. When price has run 80% of the move (the point you must not enter) — FOMO peaks, because "now it is clear it is strong."
FOMO is therefore a compass that always points the wrong way — the more you want to enter, the worse the timing usually is.
3 forms of FOMO to catch:
1. Entry FOMO — chasing price that has already run (the gold example) 2. Revenge FOMO — "I just missed a winning trade, I must find a new one to make up for it now" → entering an off-system trade 3. Social FOMO — seeing people in a group show off profits → "they got it, I must too" → trading after others with no reason of your own
How to kill FOMO — 4 techniques that actually work:
Technique 1 — chant the mantra: "there will always be a next setup" The market is open 5 days a week, every week, all year — opportunity never runs out. The trade you "missed" today does not matter, because tomorrow there is another.
Technique 2 — if price has already run, do not chase — wait for the pullback If you see a move after it has already run, you missed this entry, done, accept it, then wait — if it is a real trend there will be a pullback to enter at a better price. If it does not pull back = not your trade.
Technique 3 — write the reason before you enter Before clicking in, write one sentence: "I am entering because ___." If the reason is "because I fear missing out" or "because it is running hard" — that is FOMO. Do not enter.
Technique 4 — Alerts instead of staring FOMO comes from watching the screen and seeing price run. Set an Alert at the zone you planned to enter, then close the screen and do something else — when the Alert fires you come back to the planned price, not the price FOMO dragged you to.
> The best trades usually feel boring — because you enter when nothing has happened yet. FOMO trades usually feel exciting — because everything has already happened.
Boredom = a good signal. Excitement = a danger signal.
