You now have a system written as clear rules on one page (Chapter 2) — but you still do not know whether it has an edge.
Taking an unproven system to real money = gambling.
A backtest is the proof — you take the system and test it against historical price data to see "if you had used this system all along, how would the results look."
Why 1,000 trades (or at least 100+)?
Remember variance from the Mindset ebook — a good system can have losing streaks, a bad system can have winning streaks purely by chance.
Backtest 20 trades → variance is too high to trust — you may have only caught a stretch where the system was "lucky" or "unlucky."
Backtest 100+ trades → you start to see the system's "true value" Backtest 1,000 trades (or 300-500 at minimum) → the value approaches the truth — like flipping a coin 1,000 times approaches 50/50.
How to backtest — 2 ways:
Way 1 — Manual backtest with Bar Replay (recommended for beginners)
TradingView has a "Bar Replay" feature — rewind time to the past, then let the candles step forward one at a time. You "trade as if live" without seeing the future.
Steps: 1. Choose the pair + timeframe per your system 2. Rewind Bar Replay 1-2 years back 3. Step the candles one at a time — when the checklist meets the conditions = log a trade 4. Follow the SL/TP rules exactly (no cheating — do not look at the future) 5. Log every trade in a table
The advantage of manual: you get to "see" the system actually work — training your eye + building confidence in the system at the same time.
Way 2 — Automated backtest (Strategy Tester) If you can code (Pine Script) — write the system as code and let the Strategy Tester run it. Fast and plentiful results, but suited to people whose system is purely mechanical rules.
The backtest log table — record every trade: Date · pair · direction (Buy/Sell) · entry price · SL · TP · result (how many R) · followed the rules? · notes
After the backtest is complete — calculate these 6 numbers:
1. Total trades — must be ≥ 100 (the more the more reliable) 2. Win rate — what % did you win 3. Average win (R) and average loss (R) 4. Expectancy — (the formula from Chapter 1) must be positive 5. Profit factor — total profit ÷ total loss · must be > 1.3 (good > 1.5) 6. Max drawdown — the deepest losing stretch · must be a number you can "live with"
The passing criteria — does this system "have enough edge to keep using": Total trades ≥ 100 Expectancy is positive Profit factor > 1.3 Max drawdown is at a level the account can bear (e.g. < 20%) The result does not come from just 2-3 big trades (if you remove the 3 best trades and it is still positive = robust)
Honesty — the iron rule of backtesting
A backtest has value only if you are honest — the biggest enemy is "fooling yourself": - Seeing the future then telling yourself "I probably would not have entered here" - "This trade lost, but it does not count, because there was news that day" - Moving the SL in the backtest because "I know it will reverse"
Every time you cheat the backtest — you are lying to yourself, and you will learn the truth when you lose real money.
Log the trades that "did not follow the rules" separately — to see how the results would look if you followed the rules 100%.
> A backtest is not "proving the system is good" — it is "finding the truth" of whether the system has an edge · if the result comes out bad — good, you just saved yourself real money
If the system passes the criteria — go to Chapter 4 · if it does not pass — congratulations, you found out before losing money, go back to Chapter 2 and adjust the system
Why backtest at least 100+ trades (not just 20)?
What is the biggest enemy of backtesting?
