The 1% Rule and the Math of Survival

The rule every pro uses — and every beginner thinks is "too small" — is the 1% rule.

Never lose more than 1% of your account on a single trade.

A $10,000 account → maximum loss $100 per trade. A $30,000 account → maximum $300 per trade.

Beginners hear that and shake their heads — "$100? When will I ever get rich?"

Let me show you the math that will change your mind.

Scenario: you hit a 10-trade losing streak — which happens to every system eventually.

Risk 1% per trade → account left ~90% → you need +11% to recover (2-3 months).

Risk 2% per trade → account left ~82% → you need +22% (4-6 months).

Risk 5% per trade → account left ~60% → you need +67% (1-2 years).

Risk 10% per trade → account left ~35% → you need +186% (almost impossible).

See it? The difference between 1% and 10% is not "10 times" — it is the difference between "recover in 3 months" and "career over."

This is what is called the Asymmetry of Loss:

Lose 10% → need +11% to get back (close). Lose 25% → need +33%. Lose 50% → need +100%. Lose 75% → need +300%.

The deeper you fall, the harder it is to climb out — and it gets harder exponentially, not linearly.

Why 1% and not 3% or 5%? Because 1% gives you enough room to breathe: lose 1% twenty times in a row (a disaster level that good systems barely ever reach) and your account is still at ~82% — you can keep trading comfortably.

Think about a casino. A casino has an edge of just 2-5%, yet casinos get rich because they never bet beyond their bankroll — each individual wager is tiny compared to total reserves, so no lucky night ever bankrupts the house.

You must be the casino, not the gambler — and the 1% rule is what makes you the casino.

If you are just starting out, I would suggest 0.5% until you have a track record of 100+ trades proving your system has an edge.

Remember: the goal of your first year is not "get rich" — the goal is "still be here"
