Risk of Ruin — The Blow-Up Probability You Never Calculated

There is one number pros calculate before using any system for real — and 99% of beginners have never heard its name.

Risk of Ruin (RoR) — the probability that you will "blow up" (lose so much you can no longer trade).

It sounds frightening, but it is the most powerful tool there is, because it answers the question: "will my system plus my money management kill me in the long run?"

RoR depends on three variables: 1. Win rate — how often you win 2. R:R ratio — how much you win versus how much you lose 3. Risk per trade — how much you risk per trade

Here are real numbers (assuming a 1:1 R:R to make it clear):

Win rate 40% → RoR is ~99-100% at any risk level — this system is doomed.

Win rate 50% → RoR ~50% at 2% risk · ~78% at 5% · ~92% at 10%.

Win rate 55% → RoR ~6% at 2% risk · ~22% at 5% · ~43% at 10%.

Win rate 60% → RoR ~0.3% at 2% risk · ~3% at 5% · ~12% at 10%.

Read those numbers carefully — they tell three truths:

Truth 1 — a win rate below 50% at 1:1 R:R = certain ruin. If your system wins 40% with only 1:1 R:R, RoR is near 100% no matter the risk. That system must be fixed at the R:R level, not the position-size level.

Truth 2 — at the same win rate, different risk changes your fate. At 55% win: 2% risk → RoR just 6% (survive) · 10% risk → RoR 43% (a coin flip on survival). The exact same system — only the position size differs — one survives, one is in danger.

Truth 3 — the goal is a RoR near 0%. Pros design for RoR under 1% — meaning win rate ≥55% and risk ≤2% and/or R:R better than 1:1.

Why does this matter? Because beginners look only at "did I profit this month" — but RoR looks at the next 1,000 trades. A system that "profits this month" with a 40% RoR is a time bomb — it keeps profiting until it hits the losing streak the math says it must, and then it is over.

Three ways to lower RoR: 1. Raise the R:R — from 1:1 to 1:2 → RoR plummets. This is the easiest lever — just choose trades where the TP is farther than the SL. 2. Cut the risk per trade — from 5% down to 1-2%. 3. Raise the win rate — the hardest, slowest path.

Beginners try to raise win rate (path 3, the hardest). Pros adjust R:R and risk (paths 1-2, which they control immediately).
