You have a system written as rules (Stage 1) · but right now you do not know whether it genuinely works · Stage 2 is the "proving" — and it is the stage beginners skip the most, and the one that most clearly separates a "trader" from a "gambler."
This stage takes roughly months 3-9 · it has 3 steps, in an order you must not swap.
Step 1 — Backtest (prove it against the past)
A backtest is taking the system and testing it against historical price data — "if I had used this system all along, how would the results look?"
Why do it: before you risk a single dollar of real money, you should know whether the system has an "edge."
- Test at least 100 trades (the more the more reliable — 300-500 is great) - Log every trade: where you entered, where you exited, how many R you gained/lost - Calculate: win rate, average win, average loss, expectancy (the expected value per trade) - Positive expectancy = the system has an edge · negative = go back to Stage 1 and adjust the system
The iron rule: be honest · no cheating, no looking at the future, no fixing the trades that lost · a cheated backtest = lying to yourself.
(the "Build a Trading System With an Edge" ebook teaches backtesting in detail)
Step 2 — Demo (prove it against the present, without knowing the future)
A passing backtest is still not enough — because in a backtest you "see the whole chart," your brain knows the answer without realizing it.
A demo is trading the system against the real market, in real time, without knowing the future — but with fake money.
- Trade the demo for 1-3 months, exactly by the system - See whether the "live" results are close to the backtest results - Drill following the rules consistently
Step 3 — Small Live (prove it against the emotion of real money)
The demo has one weakness — it has no "emotion of real money" · fake money lost does not hurt, so the brain feels no pressure.
Small Live = trading real money, but a very small amount — small enough that losing it does not hurt, but real enough to feel.
The purpose: add "the pressure of real money" into the equation · if you trade well on the demo but your hands shake once it is real money — you have a "discipline" problem to fix before Stage 3.
Why Stage 2 matters most — and is skipped most
Stage 2 is not fun · it is slow, it is boring, it is like homework · so beginners want to skip it — "I am confident, let me just go take a prop firm Challenge."
But think — Stage 2 uses "fake money + a tiny sum" to find the truth · if your system has no edge, Stage 2 tells you while it is still "cheap" · if you skip Stage 2, you find the truth by losing prop firm fees over and over — far more expensive.
> Stage 2 answers one question: "do you genuinely have an edge?" · answer "yes" with numbers, not with a feeling, then go to Stage 3 · answer "no" and that is good too — you just saved yourself a lot of money
Stage 2 completion checklist — you are ready for Stage 3 when: Backtest of 100+ trades · positive expectancy Demo of 1-3 months · results close to the backtest · following the rules over 90% of the time Small Live · you got through the emotion of real money without abandoning the system You "believe" in your system because you have seen it work — not because you hope
The next stage — you have proven skill · it is time to amplify it with a prop firm's capital
What is the correct order of Stage 2 (proving it)?
Why is Stage 2 (proving it) the "most important" stage but the most skipped?
